Ra'anana, Israel, June 10, 2003. Clalit Health Services of Israel, one of the world's largest HMOs, has completed the main implementation phase of the dbMotion Clinical Information Integration (CII) solution. The project now connects Clalit's 14 hospitals, 1,200 patient clinics and benefits Clalit’s 3.7 million members throughout Israel.
The dbMotion™ solution enables clinical information to be gathered from geographically distributed computer systems to create a complete view of the patient’s medical history, on demand and in real-time. The patient's virtual patient object contains his/her entire medical history that includes test results, administered treatments, hospitalizations, patient complaints, etc.
The dbMotion solution makes it possible for authorized medical staff to retrieve the information on demand, subject to access restriction policies, and can be implemented without the need to replace existing IT systems in hospitals, clinics and institutes where it is installed.
According to Rachel Berkovich, Manager of Business Intelligence at Clalit Health Services, the dbMotion solution, which enables every care giver to obtain immediate patient data at any given moment, makes it possible for Clalit's health professionals to dramatically improve the quality of care and service they administer. “The immediate availability of critical clinical data such as medicine sensitivity, pathology history and patient complaints helps medical professionals make educated decisions more quickly. This constitutes a real breakthrough."
"In addition," says Berkovich, “the system has resulted in substantial savings by eliminating superfluous testing, a cost that can reach thousands of dollars per patient. Because of this success we have decided to go on and expand the system, planning to install two new dbMotion software modules: Patient Monitor which enables family doctors to implement a personal and proactive health plan for their patients; and Managed Discharge which aids clinicians in keeping track of recently-hospitalized patients who need follow-on care such as nursing or rehabilitation."
"The system has introduced a real revolution in the availability of clinical data to our health professionals," says Dr. Ziv Rosenbaum, Deputy General Manager of the Rabin Medical Center in Petah Tikva. "For us, the dbMotion system provides a great advantage. Since its installation the hospital has not only benefited from a reduction in redundant testing and an improvement in the quality of care, it has also speeded up the patient discharge process. We are also able to avoid mistakes that can emanate from the misreading of hand-written data, a problem found in hospitals around the world. This constitutes an immense step forward for us.”
"Another great advantage for large, multiple-service organizations such as Clalit is a substantial improvement in the communications between the medical staff and our members." says Rosenbaum. “The dbMotion solution creates continuity in the treatment of patients across different health providers. In the past, when a family physician directed a patient to hospitalization, he or she was unable to follow up on the patient’s situation until the patient was released and returned to the clinic. Thanks to the dbMotion solution, the patient's clinical data is available to the family physician, and to other relevant and authorized medical staff in community clinics, at any given moment."
Dr. Orna Blondheim, now Manager of Ha'emek Hospital in Afula, Israel, has been in charge of implementing the dbMotion project in Clalit Health Services. "This is a system with very high capabilities that marks the beginning of a revolution in healthcare. Upon completing the installation of the system, 60% of Israel's citizens will have their complete health records available to care givers on-demand."
Dr. Rosenbaum adds, "Doctors and other medical staff who use the system see it as a serious upgrade to the quality of their work and view it as a major advancement in care. This doesn't mean that we forgo the regular patient questioning process that is part of standard protocol in every medical process, but the dbMotion system increases our ability as doctors to provide better healthcare while decreasing our chances of making human errors due to the absence of critical data when we need it."
